Day 1: Discover Wuzhen – East Zone by Day, West Zone by Night


Start your first day in Wuzhen by exploring the East Scenic Zone (东栅), the older, quieter part of town brimming with traditional southern Chinese architecture and historic charm. If you’re arriving from nearby cities like Hangzhou or Shanghai, you’ll likely get to Wuzhen around noon. No worries, half a day is plenty to soak in the magic of East Gate, and if you have more time, even better!

What I love about the East Scenic Zone is its tranquil atmosphere, with far fewer tourists than the bustling West Scenic Zone; its authentic charm—you’ll still find locals living here; and its unique cultural performances, especially the must-see high-pole boat show!


Wander through the peaceful stone-paved street, with traditional wooden houses lining the way, and you’ll uncover fascinating cultural treasures. Admire the intricate Chinese beds in the Ancient Bed Museum, each one holding stories and dreams from centuries past. Marvel at indigo-dyed fabrics swaying gently in the breeze at Hongyuantai Dye House. Taste the local rice wine at the Sanbai Wine Workshop—just be ready for its strong kick! And make sure to catch the high-pole boat performances at God Fortune Bay, a captivating spectacle you won’t want to miss.

God Fortune Bay
(财神湾)

God Fortune Bay is a lively spot in the East Scenic Zone, famous for its captivating cultural performances. The highlight is the high-pole boat show, where talented performers balance, climb, and dance on towering poles fixed to traditional wooden boats. The skill, tradition, and excitement of the performance are truly impressive—it’s a must-see!

Family House of Muxin
(木心故居纪念馆)

Mu Xin (1927–2011) was a Chinese artist, writer, and poet celebrated for blending Eastern and Western influences. Born in Wuzhen, he endured significant hardships during the Cultural Revolution before moving abroad, where his time in Europe and the U.S. deeply shaped his creative expression. His art and literature explore themes of memory, exile, and resilience, offering a moving perspective on beauty and loss. Visit the Mu Xin Family House, where he spent his final years, for a glimpse into his remarkable life and artistry.

Ancient Bed Museum
(江南百床馆)

The museum features a fascinating collection of over 20 antique beds, each with its own story and history spanning hundreds of years. These beds are more than just furniture; they embody the hopes and values of those who once used them—symbolizing wishes for good fortune, prosperity, or family blessings. As you take a closer look, you’ll admire the exquisite craftsmanship, with intricate carvings that showcase the skill of traditional Chinese artisans. Each bed offers a unique window into the past, revealing the culture, customs, and everyday lives of past generations.

Sanbai Wine Workshop
(三白酒坊)

This historic winery is renowned for its distinctive, fragrant rice wine, crafted from a unique blend of three “whites”: white rice, white glutinous rice, and pure spring water. Step inside to explore the fascinating process behind this ancient drink, from its brewing techniques to the secret family recipes passed down through generations. And, of course, don’t miss a chance to sample this uniquely sweet rice wine!

Hongyuantai Dye House
(宏源泰染坊) 

Discover the elegance of traditional Chinese indigo dyeing! Known for its stunning blue-and-white patterns, this dye house preserves centuries-old methods that turn simple fabrics into works of art. Wander through the workshop to see how artisans use natural dyes, hand-stamping, and wax-resist techniques to create intricate designs rooted in Chinese folklore and nature.

Wood Carving Museum
(江南木雕馆)

Step into the Wood Carving Museum, where centuries-old craftsmanship comes alive through intricate carvings and captivating scenes from Chinese culture and folklore. Discover wooden pieces depicting dynamic scenes like the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea and traditional symbols such as dragons, phoenixes, and seasonal flowers—all carved with stunning precision to bring out rich textures and lifelike details.

Shadow Play
(皮影戏馆) 

For a fun and cultural experience in Wuzhen, be sure to stop by the Shadow Play Theater. This traditional art form has been around for over 2,000 years, using beautifully crafted leather puppets to tell stories through shadows. At this charming theater, you can get a taste of this ancient art, learn about its history, and even watch a live performance that brings local legends to life!

Huiyuan Pawnshop (汇源当铺)

Dating back to the Daoguang era of the Qing dynasty (1821–1850), this pawnshop once served as a vital lifeline for locals seeking quick cash or financial support. Standing before the towering wooden counters, you can almost sense the trepidation of those who came to pawn their valuables, dwarfed by the imposing design meant to reinforce the authority of the staff. Step behind the counters to reverse the roles, immersing yourself in the meticulously preserved setting and envisioning the bustling transactions that defined life here in the past.


As evening falls, head over to the West Scenic Zone (西栅). This part of the town is especially enchanting at night, with lantern-lit streets and bridges casting shimmering reflections in the water. Here, you’ll find bustling markets, cozy tea houses, and riverside bars—perfect spots to kick back with dinner or a drink. I’d definitely recommend booking your stay in West Scenic Zone in advance. There’s no better way to end the day than falling asleep by the water and waking up to the peaceful canals in the morning.

Day 2: Cultural Immersion in West Scenic Zone


Start your second day in Wuzhen’s West Scenic Zone by treating yourself to the town’s Morning Tea traditions (早客茶), a must-try experience and my personal favorite. It perfectly reflects the slow, easygoing pace of life here. Savor local favorites like soup dumplings, mini wontons, shumai, crispy Chinese donuts, and more. Enjoy your meal by the water as the melodies of traditional opera fill the air—it’s a moment that truly captures the soul of Wuzhen.

After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll through the lively water market (水上集市) nearby, a centuries-old tradition that’s still alive today. In the past, locals would row boats loaded with fresh produce, poultry, and other goods from nearby villages to sell here. Now, the market buzzes with vendors offering everything from fruits and vegetables to poultry and unique local crafts—a charming Chinese take on a farmers’ market with a water town vibe.

For the rest of the day, immerse yourself in the charm of the West Scenic Zone, where Wuzhen’s rich culture and traditions surround you at every turn. Try your hand at the Foliage Dyeing Workshop, seek blessings for love at the ancient Yuelao Temple, discover the art of soy sauce making at the Soy Sauce Workshop, and stumble upon even more surprises along the way. If you haven’t already, don’t miss the chance to hop on one of the traditional wooden rowing boats. Gliding through the peaceful canals gives you a whole new perspective of the town—it’s like the southern Chinese version of a gondola ride in Venice. Definitely a must-do!

Chinese Footbinding Cultural Museum
(三寸金莲馆)

The museum offers a sobering look at the history of foot-binding in China. For centuries, young girls had their feet bound in an attempt to achieve the ideal “golden lotus” shape, which was considered a symbol of beauty and status. Walking through the museum, you’ll learn about the cultural and societal pressures that upheld this tradition, and you’ll see a large collection of foot-binding shoes from the past. Visiting the museum was emotionally tough for me, but it was eye-opening and definitely worth it.

Soy Sauce Workshop
(叙昌酱园)

Love soy sauce? It’s a staple of Chinese cuisine, and at the 160+ year-old Xuchang Soy Sauce Workshop, you’ll get an insider’s look at how this essential ingredient is traditionally made. From the natural fermentation techniques to the careful blending of soybeans, wheat, and salt, the workshop offers a fascinating look at how tradition and craftsmanship come together to create the rich, complex flavors that have shaped Chinese cooking for centuries.

Yuelao Temple
(月老庙)

Looking for a little love magic? Swing by Yuelao Temple, one of Wuzhen’s most popular spots, and home to Yuelao, the Chinese god of love and marriage. Known for “tying the red strings of fate” between people meant to be together, Yuelao is said to bring good fortune to couples and help singles find their match. Inside, you’ll find visitors wishing for love, leaving notes for their soulmates, or strengthening the bond with their partners. Who knows—maybe Yuelao has a little love luck in store for you, too!

Yichang Foundry Workshop
(亦昌冶坊)

Curious about the “Top Wok in the World”? You’ll find it in the courtyard of the Yichang Foundry Workshop! With over 400 years of history, this place offers a fascinating look at traditional ironwork. Watch artisans bring old-school iron-making techniques to life and learn how intricate iron woks are crafted. Don’t miss the stone-carved pillars—they weren’t just for style; they were cleverly designed to prevent fires back in the day!

Muxin Art Museum
(木心美术馆)

For a dose of art and inspiration, visit the Muxin Art Museum, where sleek, modern design contrasts beautifully with Wuzhen’s traditional charm. Dedicated to Muxin, a beloved painter, poet, and writer born right here in Wuzhen, the museum showcases his moving paintings and writings that explore themes like memory, solitude, and beauty. You might also catch rotating exhibitions featuring works by other artists, adding to the creative energy of the space.

Dragon-shaped Farm

Longxing Field offers a glimpse into Wuzhen’s rustic countryside charm. Designed in the shape of a coiled dragon, it bursts with seasonal beauty, with stone paths winding through vibrant flower-filled terraces. In spring, the fields glow with golden rapeseed blossoms, while summer transforms them into a dreamy sea of purple verbena. It’s a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll, stunning photos, and a refreshing connection to nature.

If You Have Only 1 Day in Wuzhen


If you only have one day to visit Wuzhen, I’d recommend focusing on either the West or East Scenic Zone and really taking your time to explore. While it might be tempting to try and see both, you’ll have a much richer experience by slowing down, wandering, and truly soaking in the atmosphere. Personally, I’d choose the West Scenic Zone—it’s home to stunning waterways, scenic boat rides, and unique hands-on experiences like the Foliage Dyeing Workshop. Plus, it stays open after sunset, giving you extra time to enjoy the evening, unlike the East Scenic Zone, which closes in the late afternoon. Of course, it all depends on what interests you most. If you can’t decide, why not make it a two-day trip and stay overnight? It’s the perfect way to fully experience Wuzhen.
